One of the fondest memories of my Granddad Nelson was trading quotes regularly over email. Sadly I lost the email archive when I went on my mission, but it has continued to be an interest of mine. I hope you enjoy my collection of quotes. A bit of everything from religion to politics to leadership.
My philosophy is that not only are you responsible for your life, but doing the best at this moment that puts you in the best place for the next moment.
If you are ever called upon to chasten a person, never chasten beyond the balm you have within you to bind up.
I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.
God loves us and believes in us and has done and will do anything he can to help us, but he will not impose on our free agency.
Down in their hearts, wise men know this truth: the only way to help yourself is to help others.
Do or do not, there is no try!
Christ says, 'Give me All. I don't want so much of your time and so much of your money and so much of your work: I want You. I have not come to torment your natural self, but to kill it. No half-measures are any good. I don't want to cut off a branch here and a branch there, I want to have the whole tree down . . . Hand over the whole natural self, all the desires which you think innocent as well as the ones you think wicked-the whole outfit. I will give you a new self instead. In fact, I will give you Myself: my own shall become yours.'
Be yourself, but be your better self.
A good leader starves the problems and feeds the opportunity.
When I was young and free and my imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world. As I grew older and wiser, I discovered the world would not change, so I shortened my sights somewhat and decided to change only my country.
But it, too, seemed immovable.
As I grew into my twilight years, in one last desperate attempt, I settled for changing only my family, those closest to me, but alas, they would have none of it.
And now as I lie on my deathbed, I suddenly realize: If I had only changed myself first, then by example I would have changed my family.
From their inspiration and encouragement, I would then have been able to better my country and, who knows, I may have even changed the world.
